We've got what we're 90 percent sure is the date for MidWestLAN12! June 18th will see the kick off of our 40 hour, 125-150 (depending on how everything works out) gamer event!

The only tournament I can confirm at the time is CS: Source returning as a cash tournament (though details are still TBA).

There are plenty of other games coming out in the next few months that could affect the tournament lineup, including BF: Bad Company 2, Supreme Commander 2, Command and Conquer 4, Starcraft 2 (maybe?), AvP, and of course the recurring games, Call of Duty, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and others.

MidWestLAN11 has come and gone and once again we have another successful event in the books. We had around 95 show up this time and the gaming was plentiful, but not as great as it could have been for this event.

The event kicked off on time at 10AM, though we had some internet hang ups that helped knock us off schedule and delaying the start of our first tournament, Call of Duty 4 5v5 until about 2PM. Six teams entered this double elimination tournament (Disregard Females Acquire Currency, Green Earth, Minutemen, Moon Unit Zappa, Team SyFy, and Weapons of Mass Abortion).

In the first round of the tournament on mp_crash we saw Green Earth topple the Weapons of Mass Abortion and moon unit zappa beat the short handed Disregard. This set up matches with Team SyFy for Green Earth, who fell on mp_backlot while the defending champions, the Minutemen, bested Moon Unit Zappa. This set up the first round of elimination matches on mp_crossfire, where Moon Unit Zappa eliminated Weapons of Mass Abortion, and Green Earth took down Disregard. While this was going on Minutemen took on Team SyFy, who found themselves falling to the defending champs, leaving them to await a match with the winner of the Green Earth and Moon Unit Zappa match. In one of the tightest games in MWL's CoD4 tournament history we saw double overtime forced in a match that finally ended up with Moon Unit Zappa emerging victorious on mp_strike. However, this run of good fortune would end for the Moon Unit as they ran headlong into Team SyFy and fell on mp_overgrown. On mp_vacant Team SyFy had hopes of besting the defending champs, but it was not to be as the Minutemen extended their streak to 3 straight championships with another dominating victory. For their efforts they received a $15 NewEgg gift card, Vroom Buzz Bites, GameSkull t-shirts, Enermax hats, and bags.

With the first tournament in the books we moved onto the MWL11 Main Event, the CS: Source 5v5 tournament. 8 teams entered this round robin divisional tournament. The two divisions found themselves named after non-operational Wisconsin LANs,with the EGL (Empire Gamers LAN) division featuring Exasperation Gaming, HaiGo, PAN, and Team Ohio and the NoG (Network of Gamers) division featuring FKING, Green Earth, uKno, and Vicious Gaming. PAN and uKno each clinched their divisions with 3-0 records which would set up matches in the first round of the playoffs with the wild card winner from the other division. Vicious, after falling to uKno in an extremely close OT match, locked up their wild card quickly with a 2-1 record. However, the other division's wildcard would take far longer to decide. Team Ohio and HaiGo found themselves in a 2 hour match that continued due to smoke breaks, a server issue, AND overtime. Team Ohio finally knocked out HaiGo and the double elimination playoffs were set.

Vicious Gaming once again pushed their amount to the brink, but came up short again as PAN knocked them in the elimination bracket with a victory on de_season. Meanwhile uKno took down Team Ohio to set up a showdown with PAN on de_scorch. PAN continued their roll and they scored a close win against uKno. Vicious Gaming did not want to be denied a shot at the championship and they decisively eliminated Ohio on de_nuke leaving them with a rematch versus uKno on dust2. Yet another close match followed, but the upstart VG could not manage the upset and fell to uKno for a well fought third place finish. This set up another epic showdown as the good Source matches continued. uKno put up one hell of a fight, but even they were unable to stop the wave of momentum that PAN had built up during the tournament and they found themselves the last team to fall, taking home $200 for their efforts, while the rest of the loot ($400) went to PAN who also snagged some Enermax bags, buzz bites, Vizo gear, and hats for their championship run.

The Super Smash Bros. tournament quietly went on in the background while the CS: Source tournament played out. 11 teams (brawl, Broforce, Disregard Females Acquire Currency, DTB, fking, HG, KSHARP IS WASHED UP, minutemen, SOOTH IS WASHED UP, Team SyFy, and Top Tier) entered this 2v2 double elimination old school competition. Due to conflicts with the Source tournament a few teams posted forfeits early. When the chaos finally settled we saw Team SyFy taking down the tournament and claiming Slankets, Enermax hats, bags, and Buzz Bites for their efforts.

The Starcraft tournament kicked off as soon as CS: Source closed out, with nine players competing in it for the right to win our last Slanket of the night. Clocked, Cursemark, Halodub, KlavoHunter, pleasekopimi, Relik, Roie, Zap, and ZOMGZombies all entered this first time MWL tournament. Relik and Roie were the last two players standing when all was said and done. Relik managed to force the first championship elimination match vs. Roie on Ride of the Valkyries, but Roie earned a hard fought victory during the elimination match, taking home the Slanket, Enermax hat, and Buzz Bites.

We unfortunately lost the L4D2 tournament due to time constraints but we DID manage to salvage TF2 in the best possible way. Throwing together two huge randomly picked teams and fighting it out on cp_well. Team Awesome managed to be Team Smurfs (hint - they were the blue team) with 9 dominating rounds before the Smurfs elected to forfeit the rest of the match. Yours truly captained Team Awesome, and even though I epically fail at TF2 90 percent of the time I managed an even KDR (that's an accomplishment for me in that game) and only got myself and my medic (myh3adhur7s) killed by the train a total of 4 times. The 11 members of Team Awesome who were not myself took home some Enermax bags and the remaining Buzz Bites.

All in all, I felt it was a very successful event. I've figured out how to work out the kinks in scheduling the next time around, and I promise to have the dedicated gaming servers more operational at MWL12 so other non-tournament action can have even more success.

To get some of you excited about the next event we hope to expand to 125-150 seats and even increase the time to 36-48 hours of gaming madness. This will mean an increase in price due to our costs going up, but it will also mean more tournaments, gaming, prizes, and even better sponsor support and a better LAN all around! Look for an announcement with the date for MWL12 soon, we're shooting for June 2010.

In the mean time, provide feedback regarding the event so we know what we can add and improve on to make our next event even more enjoyable!

-We are setting up starting @ 3:30PM tomorrow. If you have volunteered to help us, show up at the senior center around then. You can bring your rigs and get your spots then if you want.
-The doors open the day of the event @ 9:30AM.
-To guarantee yourself a spot, be sure to prepay! There's still time to do so.
-If you can no longer attend the event be sure to unregister so some other lucky gamer can get into the LAN who's on the waiting list!

Also, our last sponsor, Vroom Foods, has sent us a ton of their caffeinated Energy Mints and Buzz Bites to give away at the LAN!

The rest will come tomorrow. Back to setting up servers...

All tournaments (CoD4, CS:S, L4D2, SC, SSB, and TF2) are still planned.

I made a mistake in editing in the schedule before and had 2 TF2 tournaments up.

I have not yet edited the schedule listed on the "Event Info" page.

Okay - as you can all see in the post below this one, the CS: Source and Super Smash Bros. tournaments have no set "start" time. Instead, they have a registration deadline.

Due to the size (I don't even and nature of both tournaments I want to try to see if a new tournament format will work for both of those tournaments.

Shortly after the registration deadline passes I will work to divide all participants/teams in the tournament into separate divisions. The teams in each division will then play each other in a round robin format to see who advances to the playoffs later during the LAN. Depending on the number of teams in each tournament it will be division winners and possibly wild cards.

For the Source tournament we will have several tournament servers up constantly throughout the LAN. You (team captains) will be in charge of finding the other team captains and getting each match "scheduled" and started. This allows for each team to have more matches in this tournament and gives a bit of a spread out feel so you can have some downtime between matches. Plus, you can still play in some of the other tournaments. You will also need to communicate with me when each tournament begins and the results of the match.

What are the thoughts on this? This is, in my opinion, the best solution to allow for a slightly less cramped schedule and to give for a larger number of games to be played in these tournaments. I set 2:30PM as the start time because most everyone is at the LAN by 2 and that gives about 8 hours of time to play the matches before the "playoffs" are to begin.

This is by no means perfect at the moment, and my description post is a bit rushed at the moment. I'll be back later to elaborate more and answer any questions.
